Myopia Management
Myopia (nearsightedness) develops from the eye growing too long. It causes trouble seeing things far away. This condition is commonly corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Glasses correct the vision, but they do not stop the eye growth.
The rates of nearsightedness have increased from 25% to 40% over the last 50 years. In Asian countries, the rates of myopia are as high as 90%. Left untreated, myopia progresses and causes eye health problems like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal detachment.
Treatment Options
-
MiSight Lenses
MiSight lenses were the first FDA approved treatment for quickly progressing nearsightedness in children 8-12 years of age. These soft contact lenses are worn during the day. Ask Dr. Cara if your child is a candidate for the Brilliant Futures Program.
-
Atropine eye drops
Weak strength, Atropine eye drops show promising results in slowing the eye growth, as well as the increasing nearsighted prescription. Dr. Cara has served as a clinical investigator at OSU on several of the ongoing studies for these eye drops.
-
Ortho-K Lenses
These are NIGHT-TIME contact lenses that gently reshape the eye. After the initial adaptation period, the patient enjoys clear, glasses-free daytime vision. These are a great option for active kids and athletes. Ask Dr. Cara if your child is a candidate.
